Why-y-y-y?
It's eight Sundays before the first Eurovision semifinal, which means it's time for my annual ranking. Same format as before - five songs per week, each ranked out of five. Let's go!
40. Denmark
Anti Social media - “The Way You Are”
Reaction: Typical standard Danish middle of the
road entry. This song is 90s nostalgia for 60s nostalgia, plus bland,
inoffensive lyrics.
Best Part: Summer's here, winter's gone/Finally I
can see the sun – if only, it was snowing yesterday

39. Lithuania
Monika Linkytė & Vaidas Baumila -
This Time
Reaction: Though most Eurovision songs can't
really be called “contemporary,” there's usually an overall trend
of modernization over the years as styles change. Not so for
Lithuania this year. This song is about as contemporary as their song
from 10 years ago, “Little By Little.” In fact, that ones is a
little more listenable now. The “Lo-o-ove, lo-o-o-o-ove” in the
chorus is painful to listen to.
Best Part: The heavy drums in the chorus

38. San Marino
Reaction: How sad that such a dated song is given
to such young singers. This hasn't been cutting edge even in their
parents' lifetimes. This sounds like a karaoke version of “Maybe”
that went off and became “Light a Candle.”
Best Part: “Chain of hearts” sounds
like...something else

37. Portugal
Leonor Andrade - "Há Um Mar Que Nos Separa"
Reaction: Even with a fresh coat of paint in the
production, it's still very middle of the road.
Best Part: Key change is interesting

36. Netherlands
Trijntje Oosterhuis - "Walk Along"
Reaction: Professionally sung and surely it will
have a very professional performance, but this song is too
simplistic, repetitive, and dull. The majority of the song is
“why-y-y-y,” not the most pleasant sound in the world. Maybe I'll
be wrong like last year.
Best Part: You only see me as a friend/But I
wish you were waiting /With roses in sunset, yeah
